Ideas for Chartres

Chartres is a beautiful old cathedral town about an hour southwest of Paris β€” easy to explore on foot, with one of France's most famous cathedrals at its heart. A few family-friendly options:

β›ͺ Chartres Cathedral

One of the greatest Gothic cathedrals in the world β€” famous for its deep-blue stained glass and the stone labyrinth on the floor. The big must-see.

πŸ” Climb the tower

Steps up the cathedral's tower reward you with a view over the rooftops and the countryside beyond.

✨ Chartres en Lumières

On summer evenings the city lights up its cathedral and monuments with huge projected light shows β€” magical after dark, and free to wander.

πŸŒ‰ Old town & River Eure

Wander the medieval lanes down to the river ("little Venice"), with old bridges, washhouses, and pretty picnic spots.

🎨 Maison Picassiette

A whole house covered inside and out in mosaics made from broken china β€” quirky and a fun surprise for kids.

πŸͺŸ Stained Glass Centre

See how the cathedral's famous windows are made at the Centre International du Vitrail.

🚜 COMPA museum

A hands-on farming museum in a striking old roundhouse β€” great for a hot or rainy afternoon.

🧺 Market day

Browse the local market on Place Billard for picnic treats and a taste of town life.

πŸš† Easy Paris day trip

Paris is only about an hour by train, so a day back in the city is simple if you feel like it.

For everyone

Good to know

The little stuff so nobody has to ask twice β€” especially the kids.

πŸ“… When & how long?

We're in Paris July 12–23, 2026. Plenty of time, so the pace stays easy.

🧭 If we get split up

Stay where you are and call/text. We'll always name a meet-up spot before we wander.

πŸŽ’ What to bring each day

Comfy shoes, a water bottle, a light jacket, and a charged phone. We walk a lot!

πŸ—£οΈ Do we need French?

Nope. A friendly "Bonjour" goes a long way, but we'll get by just fine in English.

πŸ’Ά Money

France uses the euro. Most places take cards, but a little cash is handy for treats.

❓ Questions or ideas?

Anything you want to add to the trip β€” just say so. The plan is flexible on purpose.

Let's go make some memories.

Paris is waiting. See you all there! πŸ₯πŸ—Ό
